Who Is At Risk?

More people are at risk for behavioral addiction than you would think. It is generally considered that anyone is at risk for addiction. This is because everyone has behaviors that could go that way.

There are of course some people who are more at risk than others. Most people will do activities that could lead to addiction. Activities like gambling, shopping, having sex or using the internet.

Figuring out how someone is more at risk is similar to finding out who is more at risk for drug or alcohol addiction.

There are definitely some things that many people with addiction have in common. Here are some signs that could lead to it.

Low Self-Esteem

For a lot of people, they don’t see what they are worth. They are unhappy and think badly of themselves. This means that if they found an activity they have control over they could get a rush or a high. They enjoy having that power.

Often that can turn into an addiction. They repeat that activity for that emotional high.

Poor Social Skills

The best tool for living life and getting along with people is communication. Not everyone has that gift though. If someone cannot communicate effectively how they feel or what they want that can lead to a lot of frustration.

This might mean that they don’t handle life’s stresses very well. This can lead to a lot of compulsions. Such as gaming or gambling and isolating oneself from reality.

Guilt, Loss, or Trauma

Some people have had a hard childhood. Or they’ve gone through things in their lives that no one should ever have to face. It can be hard learning to cope with these experiences. They might turn to an activity to distract them.

They will try and “escape” instead of dealing with their problems.
