Marcia Gambrell Hovick, founder and director of Children's Experimental Theatre, Inc., Carmel-by-the-Sea, generously supplied photographs of her one-act productions.

Catherine H. Lewis, my sister, not only has always inspired me but also scanned every page of the manuscript with a scholarly eye.

Kathleen Maire Dwyer, my wife, with love and forbearance engendered proper perspective through these years.

Tina Louise, my genteel pit bulldog companion, watched me write, took me on walks, and gave me support and affection until April 3, 1993.

I thank them and the many others who helped bring the print volume to publication.
