§ Dramatis Personae Cameraman (m), __, _____; Interviewer (non-gender, but best played as a f), __, _____; Irina Ivanova (f), elderly, former cosmonaut, on her deathbed; Technician (f), __, _____.

§ Synopsis “On her deathbed, Irina Ivanova "remembers" how history would have been had she been selected to be the first woman in space, and she reenacts it in her mind—in the form of giving an interview to a filmmaker doing a documentary on her life.

§ Comment “Irina Ivanova, one of five women training for the honor of being a cosmonaut, was a last-minute selection. This play envisions the regret and bitterness of the women who weren't selected, and who never flew in space. Loosely based on the spaceflight of Valentina Tereshkova, who in 1963 became the first woman in space—scoring yet another Soviet space spectacular. • Passed initial screening in 2003 Pittsburgh New Works Festival. A judge who gave it an 89 out of a possible 100 wrote: ‘This is a very lovely play and I enjoyed it a lot. The ending is so lovely and sad . . . . With a good director, this could be a really enjoyable show.’”

§ Themes “history, regret, Russia, Soviet Union, spaceflight, women.”
