§ Dramatis Personae Angus (m), 60-ish, alleged former actor; Terence Harper (m), 30, handsome, mysterious; Mrs. B. (f), 60-ish, widow, owner of the house; Maple Leaf Macoy (f), 35, nightclub singer.

§ Synopsis “Four disparate souls, one a mysterious stranger, share a house in London, England, circa 1980, each life impinging on the others. Their relationships evolve, disintegrate and mutate. The group includes alleged former actor Angus, writing his memoir; nightclub singer Maple Leaf Macoy, with a past and perhaps a future; Mrs. B., widow, owner of the house; and Terence Harper, handsome, mysterious, who symbolizes what each of the others has lost.

§ Comment “‘The Happy Idea’ begins amusingly, takes unexpected dramatic turns. Music and songs are woven into the scenes. • The single set is a sitting room, nicely furnished, with a mantelpiece, a piano, a drinks cabinet, and a few assorted chairs including an easy chair.

§ Themes age, badinage, beauty, desire, emotional torment, hope, intrigue.
