§  Dramatis Personae Marc Danson (m), 35-50, an unemployed public relations man; Jerome Basinger (m), 35-50, Lena’s husband; Dorothy Danson (f), 35-50, Marc’s wife, receptionist for Dr. Loiter, the psychiatrist; Lena Basinger (f), Dorothy’s younger husband.

§  Synopsis “It is the last day of Marc and Dorothy Danson’s fifteen-year marriage. Three and a half years ago, Marc, formerly a Senior VP or PR, was downsized. He can’t find a new job. His hobbies and his dream of winning a position in Osaka, Japan, are the only interests that keep him going. The hobbies seem to be randomly chosen but reflect definite goals, one of which has to do with Dorothy, who has had to go back to work as a $10.50 an hour receptionist. She feels cheated and betrayed and has no sympathy left for Marc. She’s running away and she’s not running alone. The answering machine picks up her lover’s calls. Although Marc’s in the room when the messages come in, he doesn’t hear them. He has his headphones on, and he’s listening to K-Earth 101.

§  Comment “One scene with minimal furniture and lots of props. One voiceover. Requires skilled players, capable of handling rich language.  •  Produced in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., by Theatre Palisades, 1995, Wordsmiths of the Los Angeles Theatre Center, 1996, and Write Act Repertory Company, 2001. A copy is in the Unpublished Plays Collection of the Los Angles Public Library.”

§  Themes betrayal, headphones, lack of communication, loss of self-esteem, love, lure of Japan, lust, prolonged unemployment, man’s need to be useful, murder, Old Testament, sex, violence.
