§ Dramatis Personae Harry
Dinker (m), private eye, a pretty starchy potato; Dora (f), an attractive
blonde, who went for a walk and came home with stars in her eyes; Bartender
(m), who gets one crummy line, but if you got a beef with that, take it
up with Equity.
§ Synopsis “Yes, here we are
back for another installment in the life and times of one Harry Dinker,
Private Eye. We open at a downstage table in a sleazy gin joint, where
Dora is dreamily recalling her first encounter with Harry Dinker. What
a man! She approaches him at the bar. He’s pretty cynical, down in the
dumps. But she can’t believe she’s encountering the legendary Mr. Dinker.
They take it back to her place, where she reveals an ulterior motive. She
wants him to kill her husband. Claims he’s abusive. But Dinker ain’t that
kind of guy, see? Draws the line at murder. Pretty soon Dora has fallen
completely under his spell. And in the end, they decide to play it straight,
seek a divorce for Dora, and go off together happily into the night.
§ Comment “This Dinker installment
has never been staged, even as a reading. I struggled over it for a period
of months, finally nailed something. • Unit set can double
as a bar and the living room of Harry’s apartment. So a couple of tables,
maybe, a couch hidden to one side, and makeshift bar, would fill the bill.”
