§ Dramatis Personae Exal (m), any age, a caveman; Teek (m), any age, a caveman; Debra (f), 30-40, a lonely Valdez cab driver.

§ Synopsis “Debra enters her apartment with Exal and Teek, after having picked them up in her cab when she found them wandering on the highway. Debra talks nonstop, and has mistaken the men for fishermen whose flight out of town was cancelled. Once she gives the men a chance to talk, she discovers that they don't speak English. (This is all done as convention; the actors are all speaking English onstage.) When Debra leaves to return to work, the men discuss their mission, which is to find a fertile woman to take back with them to their dwindling, primitive tribe of cavepeople. Both are fascinated by the wonders of the modern world: the microwave, the Ford Excursion, and the entertainment center. But Teek is determined to stick to the plan and find a woman, and talkative Debra is not his choice. Exal finds Debra charming, and wants Teek to stay and give her a chance. Teek reluctantly agrees to stay, but only to get rested up and enjoy the television, which is showing a football game. Exal tries the VCR, and discovers the movie Terms of Endearment. Teek wants to watch football, Exal wants to watch the movie. They get into a fight over it, and nearly destroy Debra's apartment. Debra returns, upset at the men's behavior. Teek insists that they immediately leave, convinced that Debra is not a good candidate for a wife/mother, and that the TV has caused them too much trouble. Debra removes her heavy winter clothing, revealing a giant, pregnant belly. Both men drop to their knees at the sight of her. Teek has a change of heart, and believing her to be a sorceress who can instantly grow babies, now wants to take Debra home to the tribe. Exal, however, does not want to leave this new world of electronic gadgetry. The two men argue, and try to explain with gestures to Debra that the TV has caused them to fight and lose sight of their goal. Realizing the problem, Debra demonstrates her TiVo machine, explaining that the TiVo allows the men to watch both football and a movie. The men see the TiVo as a great sage, a solver of all problems and disagreements. Teek now agrees that they can stay with Debra and start their own tribe, The TiVo Tribe. Lonely, pregnant Debra is thrilled to have found not one, but two men to keep her company and help her raise the baby.

§ Comment “Two scenes, same setting. Requires a working microwave onstage. Lots of sound cues. Heavy props list, especially for Teek's microwave food disasters. • Premiered in an evening of one-act plays entitled Fourplay at Cyrano's Off-Center Playhouse in Anchorage, Alaska, September 9-19, 2004.

§ Themes caveman, children, Cinderella, communication, Dolphins, fairy godmother, football, goddess, isolation, loneliness, magic, microwave, Oprah, pregnancy, sorcery, SUV, Terms of Endearment, TiVo, TV, VCR.
