Hatcher, Tim (American playwright, writer/animator, 1957-____), “Bad Roof,”

© 1995, script/rights available from Tim Hatcher, 1208 Barlow Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75224, U.S.A., telephone (home) 214-331-9111, (work) 214-352-4694x14, fax 214-352-4696. Cited by Tim Hatcher via ftp, December 9 and 12, 1997; Hatcher says,

Dramatis Personae Arlis Tremain (m), early 40s; Jo Lynn Marquette (f), 30s; Ellie Polard (f), 20s; Wanda Lassiter (f), 50s.

Synopsis “Arlis Tremain, a retired Appalachian miner, reflects on his rise up the ladder at the nonunion Big Ridge coal mine, and his ongoing quest to find ‘a wife, a kid, and a surface job.’ Between Arlis’ monologues in which he addresses the audience, he revisits four pivotal encounters he has had over the years with some of the widows of Big Ridge. The resentfulness of these strong women prove to be more of a threat to his happiness than any danger the mine itself may have once held.

Comment “A bare stage would work, although ideally there are clotheslines visible from which hang clothes from the families of the coal miners. There are no scene changes.

Themes “ambition, Appalachia, coal miners, survival, unions, women.”
