Synopsis "Ruck, a poet, comes back from a brutal war. His mother doesn't recognize him until he starts reciting botanical facts she taught him as a child. His girl arrives for this homecoming. Ruck's sudden screaming attacks of guilt and horror from the war shatter the mood. His mother, her own mind unstable, fails in her efforts to comfort him; she lets slip that she was responsible for Ruck's father's death. Endive, Ruck's girl, also has bad news: she will marry someone else. Ruck, left with his memories of horror and despair, finds a perverse pleasure in the turn of events.

Comment "No significant staging requirements. The actor playing Ruck must paint one of his arms black."
