Dramatis Personae Mr. Gilkey (m), country gentleman; Ruthie
(f), a visitor; Edith (f), a visitor.
§
Synopsis “Mr. Gilkey is stretched out on a lawn chair in
the front yard of his country home, reading a newspaper. Enter Ruthie and
Edith, who will stop at nothing to prod and pester him into giving them
a ‘look see’ at his legendary ‘flagpole.’ It seems that the girls
were up in Sussex for the fair, and they heard talk of Gilkey's ‘flagpole,’
and wanted to see for themselves. They try a series of tricks and maneuvers
to coax him into lowering that newspaper so they can get a peek.
Finally, in frustration, he grants their wish. Only, of course, it’s
a miniature British flag he's holding, not quite what we had expected.
But alas -- they are delighted, the joke’s on us, and all gather in a conga
line to shake and shimmy to disco strains of ‘Rule Britannia.’ Good show.
