§ Dramatis Personae Siobhan (f), 30, a keen and efficient catering assistant, second-generation Irish, Manchester born, wife of Lee, mother of one son, Kieron.
§ Synopsis “Siobhan recently started work in the Hospital café to supplement the family income. A keen and efficient catering assistant, she is telling a customer about her job. Siobhan’s discourse reveals that she is concerned about illness, specifically cancer. Siobhan, not so comfortable in the job as she pretends, has poor associations with the hospital, as it is where her Nana died.
§ Comment “The monologue is easily staged (requires just a chair and table) and makes an ideal audition/showcase piece. • “The monologue was written to be performed with my other monologues ‘Breathe Easy’ and ‘Patience’ as a 30-minute piece called ‘Healing Arts’. ‘Healing Arts’ was filmed in 2003 as ‘Doctor’s Mark’ and entered into the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2003.”
§ Themes death, fear of illness, health, money, parenting.
