§ Dramatis Persona Lydia (f), 50, a housewife who has always done good works and is very active in the Hospital League of Friends working in the Fund Raising Department.
§ Synopsis “Set during a relaxation class in an English Hospital. Lydia, has volunteered to lead the class in a subject she has no knowledge of. Lydia, who is charge of fund raising has little time for alternative therapies and bullies the patients in the class. Lydia is incredibly hurt when one of the patient’s complains and rants about their ingratitude.
§ Comment “The monologue was written to be performed with my other monologues ‘Patience’ and ‘Wipe Away the Smears’ as a 30 minute piece called ‘Healing Arts’. ‘Healing Arts’ was filmed in 2003 ‘Doctor’s Mark’ and entered into the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2003. A section of ‘Breathe Easy’ has been performed at the Actors’ Centre in London’s West End. The monologue is easily staged (requires just a chair and a book) and would make an ideal audition/showcase piece.
§ Themes alternative therapy, gratitude, physical illness, relaxation, volunteerism.
